GROUPS of pupils recently got an informative insight into the range of career opportunities and varied professions at Southend University Hospital after they spent the day at the Trust.
Students from Belfairs and Greensward Academies, in Leigh and Hockley, were taking part in the fifth annual ‘Meet the Professionals’ day.
After participating in hand washing and blood pressure demonstrations, students met a wide range of clinical and non-clinical hospital staff who had a short interview with different groups of students, telling them about their roles.
Lunch was followed by hospital tours to get a feel for what they can expect should they decide to choose a career in the NHS. One of the areas students visited was the Simulation Suite, where they got to ‘treat’ one of the state-of-the-art manikins.
The £120,000 centre is designed to look and feel like a typical patient bay, complete with manikins that can be used to stage any medical scenario for training and better understanding.
Nicky Barrett, a teacher from Belfairs Academy, said: “Meet the professionals is a great day for our students.
“They gain an insight into the real world of working within the NHS. Meeting a whole range of professionals also helps them realise that there is a wide range of job roles, the day inspired many of our students to consider working within the NHS.”
