SIR, battling climate change needs action on many fronts, and remaining constantly aware of the various challenges in Leigh and across the town.

The Environmental scheme introduced into the Council policy after we, as Liberal Democrats, joined with Labour and the Independent group, to lead the council instead of the Conservatives, this includes our wide- reaching tree policy.

Tree cover has increased across the town, with the Council planting as many trees as possible in the streets, parks and open spaces.

Residents can play a major part too, by planting more trees and shrubs and reducing the area of concrete in driveways and gardens.

An Environmental scheme for our foreshore has come forward from a scheme I persuaded the Council to set up some years ago, with three other coastal towns in Holland & Belgium who`s water cover the North Sea coastal areas.

This will look at “soft engineering” to break up wave action before it hits the beaches and revetments, to take the force from the waves that do the most damage.

Two Tree Island still has a problem with the base of the creek undercutting the north-east corner of the sea wall. I am pushing for the mud from the silted up part of the creek to be put in front of this area, to build up the saltmarsh to protect the sea wall and create a new habitat alongside the nature reserve.
