Leigh: Councillors frustration at ‘Chaos in Old Leigh’
by
LEIGH Lib-Dem Coun Peter Wexham has voiced his frustration at the behaviour seen recently in Old Leigh
He said: “Since the relax of lockdown and the sun coming out, the Old Town has again been under a siege from younger people that could not care a less for anyone. The Pubs are closed, so they are not to blame for the amount of alcohol that is being drunk.
“When the team from the Council went down there they were confiscating drink and pouring it down the drain, from these under aged drinkers who are too young to drink or buy the drink. So they must have been taking it from home or have someone buy it for them”
Coun Wexham said that he had received a phone call from a local fisherman who told him that the area was filling up with youngsters with carrier bags full of drink and as he was driving home, he had seen people descending on the Old Town from all directions. The fisherman asked if Coun Wexham would inform the authorities, which he did.
Coun Wexham added: “They must be using social media for information that says they will descend on the Old Town in their hundreds.”
Coun Wexham said that one family had told him that they had: “had to leave as it was getting very nasty in the old town with gangs, not a gang, but gangs, shouting at each other, they were throwing cans and bottles into the water and leaving rubbish everywhere that the residents had to clear up when it was all over.
“On top of that the jet skis were racing around causing more trouble on the water. When Summer gets here and people are swimming someone will get seriously hurt or killed.
“Through the years of cuts the foreshore Department do not have many staff and they run the pier and the two patrol boats have been taken out of service years ago and the marine police boat also went out of service a long time ago.
“It is outrageous the state of beaches and parks all over the country have been trashed, with thousands of tonnes of rubbish. It’s not just Leigh or Southend, it is nation wide, yet these same people watch Sir David Attenborough and see what waste plastic is doing to the world. They are making beauty spots into landfill sites. Is that the kind of world they want to live in”
